The one thing you will hear us continuously emphasizing on this site is that photography is art. In fact, just the other day we talked about daring photographers who “toss” their cameras in the air to create some very interesting and creative pictures. Today we are going to show you how you can add some more creativity to your pictures by using textures.

When you add textures, what you are doing is taking a photo and blending it with an image of textures like sand, wood, peeling paint, brick, etc. While this may sound a bit strange to those who may not have any experience with working with textures, the end results can be quite beautiful.

For this post, we are going to use the two images above. Textures can be easily found by doing a simple Google image search under “textures”. You can also create your own texture image file by taking a picture of the texture you want to use (a macro shot of sand, close up shot of a brick wall, etc.). Only your creativity is the limit here.

Step 1: Once you are in Zoner, you want to open up both images in Editor mode. Notice how a tab at the top of the window is created. To open a second editor window, just click on that icon with the pencil and paper and from there you will be able to open your second image.

Step 2: Once your second image has been opened, go to your actual photograph tab and select Edit>Copy.

Step 3: Switch to the tab that with the texture and select Edit>Paste. So right now your image should look something like this.

Step 4: The option that allows you to change opacity and the type of opacity is located just above the main window. Typically the software will default to the Normal mode and as you can see the texture is not blended quite the way we want it. From here you are going to play around with both the opacity and mode settings to get the desired effect. For this example we set our opacity to 100% and went with the Hard Light mode.

Step 5: Click on the “Apply” button that is located in the same menu bar area and now the image has become one with the texture. From here, all you have to do is crop.

Below, you will find some other pictures we were able to create with Zoner Photo Studio by adding textures.

Notice on this one we actually cropped it so that it left us with a border.
